I saw how financial advising was done at an early age when I was in high school. My mother became a widow when I was a senior, and his sister was a freshman. My father was the sole earner in the house and after his passing it was a tough financial time. I learned the confidence my mother gained from having an advisor but also learned the costs not only of high fees but also poor advice. A flat fee structure eliminates many conflicts of interest, such as commission-based products or percentage-based fees, when there might be more suitable options. Financial advice is important to help individuals make big life decisions, but currently most of the industry does not utilize a flat fee model and still views advisors as salesmen rather than planners.
